Biography

Dr Munaz Ahmed Noor was a Professor of Civil Engineering Department in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) before he joined National University as a Pro-Vice Chancellor on 11 April 2013. He received his B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering and M. Sc. degree in Structural Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1995 and 1997, respectively. He was awarded University Gold Medal for best academic performance in both the degrees. Earlier to this he was also awarded the presidential Gold medal for standing first in combined merit list in HSC. He was then awarded a scholarship by Asian Development Bank and received his PhD in Civil Engineering from University to Tokyo, Japan in 2000. Between 2000 to till now he participated in numerous earthquake and concrete material related private and public projects. He visited Bangalore, India in 2004 for further training on earthquake Engineering. He contributed to and conducted many seminars and short courses on Earthquake Engineering and concrete technology in Bangladesh. His main research interests are in concrete technology, urban safety, climate change, earthquake engineering and disaster risk management. In May 2005 he visited, Delft, Netherlands and participated in a short course on Private Public Partnership (PPP). In July 2007 he visited Japan to participate in a short course on seismology. In 2008 he visited ICTP, Italy for advance training on earthquake engineering in nuclear power plant design. He contributed a chapter in book titled “Climate change and growth in Asia”. from Edward Elgar Publishing. He edited “Earthquake resistant design manual” on behalf of Bangladesh Earthquake Society where he is elected as General Secretary. He is the author of the popular book “Designing with grade 5000 steel” published from UPL. He is the editor of the newly launched monthly magazine “Beyond Building”. He is also the author of many national and international Journal and conference papers. From the end of 2008 till the beginning of 2010 the completed eight short courses on Disaster Risk Management framework and climate change offered by World Bank Institute with “earthquake and megacities initiatives (EMI)”. He is currently holding the position of Director in BUET-Japan Institute for Disaster prevention and Urban safety. He has been selected as an expert member in joint survey committee formed for the Tipaimukh Dam. He is the expert member of the “Shadhinota Stambha” Design team. Recently he is nominated by Ministry of Education as the syndicate member of Independent University Bangladesh. He is further holding the position of Vice Chairman, civil engineering division of BSTI. Earlier to this he was the Chairman of Cement and Bonding material committee of the same department. He has been elected as the Vice-Chairman of the Civil Engineering Division, Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB). He is also the member of “Digital Bangladesh Task Force” headed by honorable Prime Minister. He is also active in many social and professional organizations.

Research Interest

Lead a large team of students and administrative officials. Responsible for performing research and financial matters of the project. Submitting final research report and project completion report to respective funding organization. Collecting fund and negotiating with the funding agencies. Title- Simplified soil-structure interaction method for buried pipe design. Support organization -Committee for Advanced Studies and Research (CASR), BUET. Title- Seismic Assessment of Existing Buildings of Bangladesh. Support organization- University Grants Commission. Title- Seismic Assessment of Existing Engineered Structures of Bangladesh and Proposals for Code Provisions. Support organization- Committee for Advanced Studies and Research (CASR), BUET. Title- Development of Earthquake and Tsunami Preparedness Program in Cox’s Bazar Area. Support organization- United Nation Office for Project Service.
